Looking for a great kids’ camp this summer? The Quiksilver Kids Pirate Paddle Camp kicks off the first session of summer camp this week (it was voted Best Camp by OC Weekly last year, by the way). Pirate Coast was also just profiled in Locale Magazine this month; the Pirate Coast ways are definitely buzzing about OC.
Our family loves the team at Pirate Coast, so we were excited to see what SUP camp was all about (I’ll be sharing a SUP-look each day here on OC Family). The camp runs for five days 9 am-noon at the Back Bay in Newport Beach (inside the Dunes parking lot near the bridge and Back Bay Bistro).
My kids said Monday kicked off with a fun SUP warm up, a paddle lesson, snack and paddle around the Back Bay back area. In their words, it was completely “awesome.” Zoe liked learning how to surf paddle (in case you lose your paddle) and had fun double paddling too. Ty was all about learning SUP tricks from Captain T (Terence, pictured above on the crazy SUP-Squatch that holds 10). The kids also enjoyed swimming around the whale in the Dunes area.
It seems the big difference between the Quiksilver Kids Pirate Paddle Camp and other SUP-related camps is that this camp is strongly Stand Up Paddle focused to ensure the kids really know what they are doing at the end of the week. But as mentioned, it’s SUP with a creative blend of fun games, races and more. Terence, who runs the camp, said that the week teaches them all they need to know about SUP. “By week’s end, the kids will be so good, they can teach their parents how to do Stand Up Paddle.” That level of confidence for the kids is wonderful I think. And since SUP is so popular in SoCal, it’s important for kids to really be experienced and water-safe for the long run. We will probably get our own SUP board this summer, and I love knowing the kids will be fully schooled.
More fun to look forward to this week? More SUP of course, as well as the kids playing on the water slides and big toys at the Dunes, plus barbeque fun on Friday when camp wraps.
