Take This Quiz… Do I Need to Meet with an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Inquiring minds want to know, does *my* family need to meet with an estate planning lawyer?

This is a great question because many families assume that since they don’t have a lot assets they probably don’t need estate planning; they figure they don’t have an “estate.”  Turns out, many families actually do need to meet with an estate planning lawyer and, at a minimum, find out what they need to know.  Here’s an easy quiz to help you figure it out.

Check off “I agree” or “I disagree” with each of the following statements:

1. I own my home and/or other real property.

__I agree __ I disagree

2. I am confident I have the right type and amount of life insurance on my life/spouse’s life.

__ I agree __ I disagree

3. I have minor children at home counting on me  for care.

__I agree __ I disagree

4. I do NOT know exactly what will happen to my assets at the time of my death.

__I agree __ I disagree

5. I do NOT have a personal relationship with the lawyer who will carry out my wishes and guide  my loved ones if I am in an accident or other crisis situation.

__I agree __ I disagree

6. I do NOT know for certain that every one of my assets, including my bank accounts is owned in the name of my trust.

__I agree __ I disagree

7. I already have a plan but have NOT reviewed it with a lawyer who is an expert at planning for families within the past two years.

__I agree __ I disagree

8.  One of these describes me:  I own a business, I am a single parent, I have a special needs child, I am part of a blended family (spouse and/or I have kids with different parents), I am a non-citizen, or I am in a non-traditional relationship.

__I agree __ I disagree

So how did you score?

If you answered “I agree” to THREE or MORE of the statements you are more than likely putting your family’s future at risk and would benefit greatly by making an appointment with an estate planning lawyer.

If you answered “I agree” to TWO of the statements, it would greatly benefit you and your family to have a consultation with an estate planning lawyer.

If you answered “I agree” to statements #4, #5, or #6, it would be a good idea to meet with an estate planning lawyer to make sure your family’s wealth is protected.

That was easy, right?  Now you know…. there may be things that you need to find out about your legal and financial affairs.  It’s easier to stick your head in the sand about these things, but it feels even better to get out there and get empowered with the information you need to make the right decisions for yourself and your family.
