Every once in awhile, something clicks with your kids–and if you’re lucky, you spot it. My husband and I both noticed just such a moment when the kids were doing stand up paddle earlier this year at Pirate Coast Paddle Company. They were out on the water, a part of nature, getting exercise, and they were remarkably peaceful. It was a beautiful thing. In that split second, my husband said, “We need to get a board.” (We haven’t yet, but will.) Seeing them at Quiksilver Kids Pirate Paddle Camp this week affirms our plans.
If you haven’t gotten your kids out of the SUP waters, Camp with Pirate Coast is a great place to give it a go. The waters are calm, as the space at the Newport Dunes is tucked away. But there is also a path to the ocean, so it gives them a chance to paddle with a few more waves and take in the gorgeous scenery.
I love camps that introduce kids to lifetime hobbies, rather than just novelties or passing phases. Below is a shot I took this morning as the kids Pirate crew was headed in for the day. How cute are they out there on their own, confident and calm.
Another big bonus of camp here is the programs that Pirate Coast offers all year long. The owners are quite creative with their SUP happenings. They offer sunset paddles, full moon paddles and GLOW paddles, as seen below (they hook up LED lights below the board). I can’t wait to take the kids out on a GLOW SUP night–what a memory for them it should be.
We’ve been paddling with Pirate Coast for a few years now. Just last week, we hit the water with them when my sister and her kids came to town (pictured below). Pirate Coast has more than 40 boards now in their fleet, so you can stop by anytime really, and rent a board (without the hassle of needing a reservation). It’s nice to go where you feel comfortable and enjoy the people there.
Here’s a look at Camp as I picked the kids up today. Ty (my trickster) jumped on Zoe’s board right before I started video’ing, so they could grab one last paddle of the day.
